A27 Problems

There are five ‘pinch points’, causing traffic to slow or stop, on the A27 at Arundel, impeding traffic flow:

  • Crossbush junction traffic lights
  • Railway bridge
  • Pedestrian controlled traffic lights by the railway station
  • Causeway roundabout
  • Ford Road roundabout.

Hold ups at these pinch points cause traffic to back up on the relief road and on the westbound Worthing Road approaching Crossbush.
Further flow problems occur at access points to and from:

  • Burpham and Warningcamp
  • Batworth Park
  • Beefeater/Premier Inn
  • Crossbush village
  • Arundel railway station, builders merchant
  • Causeway houses
  • Arundel Community Hospital
  • Fitzalan Road
  • Jarvis Road

Queues are less frequent going westbound on Chichester Road or eastbound after theĀ  Burpham turning and outside peak times, flow is reasonable.

Flow is the key issue rather than capacity.

Solutions

The benefits of the ‘new Purple’ proposal include:

  • significant improvement of traffic flows;
  • improved safety as wide single lanes permit visibility andĀ  better access in case of incidents;
  • four of the five main pinch points at Arundel eliminated. The Ford Road roundabout remains and is comparable to others on the A27;
  • improved access to and from Arundel railway station;
  • safe access to villages, Burpham, Warningcamp, Crossbush;
  • relief of the old railway bridge and replacement in the A27.

Additional benefits of the proposal over other Highways England options include:

  • no loss of housing or business;
  • no loss or division of ancient woodland, or significant wildlife habitat;
  • limited impact on the landscape of the Arun Valley;
  • no new road in the South Downs National Park;
  • no further severance of villages or communities and continued linkage to the National Park;
  • reduced noise and air pollution (other HE options are acknowledged to increase pollution);
  • no loss of amenity, including popular walks;
  • reduced flood management issues
  • sufficient capacity, minimising generated traffic;
  • reduced impact on pinch points at Chichester and Worthing;
  • no loss of passing trade;
  • significantly lower costs than other HE route options.
